I don’t know where it came from, but my Sudoku.java file has an import android.R line. If you keep this then the compiler can not resolve any references to the apps R.* resources. You might want to make sure to tell people to remove this just in case.

The following line of code:
foreground.setStyle(Style.FILL);
should read
foreground.setStyle(Paint.Style.FILL);

The Java code within the book will sometimes show line numbers in the left margin, but not always.

Sometimes the line numbering is shown for code (e.g., page 129-130) and sometimes it isn’t (e.g., page 91 - 92).

I’m not sure what the criteria are for showing line numbers or not or whether this is simply a matter of inconsistency.

It’s not a big deal, but I prefer the non-enumerated code because I will occasionally copy portions of the code from the PDF and prefer not to carry over the line numbers.

Thank you for the book!

I would highly recommend using .ogg files for the examples, as using mp3s requires a (costly) licence from the Frauenhofer Institute to use.

In list of common layouts provided by Android, “FrameLayout” has an extraneous word at the beginning of its description. It says “classArranges” where all other descriptions begin with “Arranges”

4232ERROR

In Sec. 3.2 the author states ”…Declarative design, on the other hand, does not involve any code. When you’re designing a simple web page, you use HTML, a markup language based on XML…”

I believe that’s wrong. Both HTML and XML were based on SGML. Then HTML was used most commonly. XML become more widely used in the late 1990s. While some might argue that XML was not directly based upon HTML, I think it can be certainly stated that HTML was not based upon XML.

146ERROR

On page 146, the first text line reads “In this example, we have five rows …”.

It’s actually 6 rows, instead of 5 …
In camelcase:
TR = row 1
ET = row 2
TR = row 3
TV = row 4
TV = row 5
TV = row 6

Minor error, but might be confusing, if you’re learning TableLayout.

section 9.6, last paragraph “for a event” should be “for an event”

Section 8.3, Subtitle “Emulation Notes”

‘create a new AVD for the “Google APIs” build target called “em15google.”’

Since the build target was actually “Google APIs (Platform 1.6)” on p. 162, this should more clearly be named “em16google.”
