Historical errata for Scripted GUI Testing with Ruby

It appears that
require ‘timeout’
should appear prior to the timeout(3) call.

This page contains a paragraph that describes using the Ruby pack() method. Part of the description states, “The
notation is similar to the one we used for Win32API’s parameter types.” This is the first time in the book the pack notation is used, so the reference to using it for Win32API’s parameter types doesn’t make sense.

After reading pg 53, I think I understand the intent of reference, but this is later in the book.

Just before the header for 5.2, pg 72 states, “One last thing: you’ll see that I’ve added an alias for the one menu
command that doesn’t fit the ID_menu_item pattern.”

In the associated sample code, there are actually two aliases: one for HELP_ABOUT, and one for FILE_EXIT.

In the ‘Yuck!’ example of how @locknote.change_password might be called, the code shows setting :confirmation => ‘new’, instead of :confirmation => true.

LockNote, approximately half-way down the page in the section named “A Close Call,” is hyphenated between the c and the k (Loc-kNote).

The text states: “You have a new document with no password, you click Save As, and you assign a password.”

The remainder of the chapter assumes this is the specification for “Save As”; however, Steganos LockNote 1.0.3 does not work this way. Instead if you select “File > Save As”, it simply prompts you for a filename and saves it unencrypted.

Neither the source code downloaded from the web site nor the code in the book accurately reflects that behavior.

Discovered by Fletcher Bonds. On some systems, launching LockNote may not be sufficient to bring it to the foreground. Adding two lines of code before the first use of keybd_event is sufficient to make sure LockNote is on top of the Z order:

Not really an error, but if you are using the Ruby 1.9.1 you will find that you get a Segmentation Fault on the ‘enforces the argument count’ of the windows_gui_spec.rb. Ruby fails hard here so the Spec never plays out. I found downgrading the Ruby Interpreter to 1.8.6 fixes this problem.

Just a note…it appears that the Win32API stuff is not well supported in Ruby 1.9.

I am not able to run the first rspec example at page 35, It looks something wrong with the rspec (2.1) installation.
