Historical errata for Working with Unix Processes

The table of contents doesn’t match the pages as expected. For example, when I click on the TOC for “Processes are Friendly”, page 50 is displayed, but the start of that chapter is actually page 49. This happens on other pages as well, consistently.

Pages are formatted in landscape instead of portrait and have to be fiddled with for printing. Also, if you click on a Table of Contents element, then that page is displayed flush right on the margins which means that the text on the left side of the page is no longer visible and you have to scroll left or minimize the TOC to read it.

2019-04-12Hi Jon, \n \nThanks for reporting this. I'm not sure what you mean by 'that page is displayed flush right on the margins'. Can you send a screenshot? \n \nJesse

Example code is often hard to read because of being printed on black background, especially the comments which are in grey. Furthermore, when printing these pages, those code examples become impossible to read and use gobs of ink when printed on an inkjet printer. Unusable and expensive to boot.

Suggest you change the formatting/color scheme to match that of other PragProg books.

2012-12-04Hi Jon, \n \nThe digital edition of the book really isn't meant to be printed. I formatted it to look good on screens. That being said, you can buy a dead-tree edition of the book from my website at http://workingwithunixprocesses.com/. \n \nThe dead-tree edition is more printer-friendly (but still landscape). If you'd like, I'd be happy to share the my source file for the printed version so you can have an easier time printing it yourself. \n \nJesse

In the sidebar `Note that the hard limit…` there is a reference to Process::RLIMIT_INFINITY. The constant should be Process::RLIM_INFINITY (verified in 1.8.7, 1.9.2, and 1.9.3)

lsof apparently is not in section 1 of the manual in that
$ man 1 lsof
causes the following line to be printed:
No entry for lsof in section 1 of the manual
That said, typing:
$ man lsof
does work… Perhaps lsof() instead of the current lsof(1)?

“There are many different ways to do IPC but I’m going to cover two commonly useful method:”

“Method” needs to be plural.
