9TYPO

There’s an extra space at the end of the second paragraph, second sentence: “It’s no silver bullet .” should be “It’s no silver bullet.”

2010-05-14Thx Leon
29TYPO

Paragraph that begins under the Agile Principle, starting with the words “But the real magic . . ” The word “they” is used twice in a row.

2010-05-15 \nThanks Michael. \n \nRe-wrote instead to say: \n \nNow self organization by itself is great, but the real magic kicks in because of what that leads too---empowerment and accountability.
29TYPO

Right above Agile Principle. “In short, you let the reigns go and trust and empower them to get the job done.” “Reigns” should be “reins.”

2010-05-15Got it. Thx Michael.
23TYPO

Last paragraph, word “how” should be deleted:
“By the end of the chapter you’ll know how what a typical…”

2010-05-14Got it. Thx Tony.
118TYPO

At bottom of page in “1 relative day ≠ 1 calender day” I believe you should use calendar.

2010-05-16You are correct. Thanks Mike.
19TYPO

The second to last paragraph:
“But out attitude is we could if we had to.”

Should read:

“But our attitude is we could if we had to.”

2010-05-14Good eye. Thx Neil.
16TYPO

Fourth paragraph, second sentence. “Most agile teams starting by…” should be “Most agile teams start by…”

2010-05-14Found it. Thx Jim.
55TYPO

“Unlike [primary competitive advantage].” “advantage” should be “alternative.”

2010-05-15Ah yes. Thank you.
32TYPO

2nd line, need a comma between “are” and “don’t”.

2010-05-25Sorry Michael I don't see this one. \n \nCan you give me the sentence? \n \nMany thx - Jonathan
35TYPO

Second paragraph, second word. “analysis” should be “analyst.”

2010-05-25Hi Michael - can you give me the sentence for this one pls? \nCouldn't find.
39TYPO

Fourth paragraph, last sentence. “In fact, the hallmark of a good agile PM is one that could walk away . . .” Grammatically “one” refers to “hallmark,” but the meaning you want to convey is that “one” refers to project managers. It should be rewritten as “In fact, the hallmark of a good agile PM is that they could walk away . . .”

2010-05-15You are a wizard. Thanks Michael.
29TYPO

“Reigns”, mid-page just above the Agile Principle, “…you let the reigns go and trust…”

I believe was intended to be “reins”

2010-05-15Yes - I see that. Thx Tony.
139SUGGEST

It’s been a while since I’d seen this (or maybe a very similar) stat… the text “By asking our customers to focus only on sometimes, always and often…” is somewhat difficult because it implies that they know what the Nevers will be.
Rather I may suggest to ask the customer to focus on their Always’ and Oftens and REALLY scrutinize the Sometimes As potential Rarely’s because it’s likely that their Sometimes’ will be their actual Rarely and Nevers..

2010-05-16I hear you Tony. And I agree with what you say. In this case I really want to emphasize forgetting the nevers because I don't want them to spend any time tracking, analysis, thinking, on the features they are never going to use. \n \nIf a feature is important they will hear about (because their customers will repeated by asking for it). But until then don't waste an ounce of energy on them. \n \nThanks for the comment.
59TYPO

Inside the little picture. “Proudct” should be “Product.”

2010-05-15Good eyes. Thanks Michael.
96TYPO

Sam’s Menu. “1 days” should be “1 day.”

2010-05-16Got it.
124TYPO

Last sentence on the page. “you don’t them.” The verb seems to be missing.

2010-05-16You're right. Should say 'you don't need them.' thx
143TYPO

Top of page. End of second sentence. “you can deliver by deliver by feature set.” Remove “by deliver.”

2010-05-16Thanks again Michael.
143TYPO

Third paragraph below the drawing. It begins with “Being flexible on scope . . ” Remove the entire paragraph as it belongs in the next section. In fact you have a slightly different version of it on the next page.

2010-05-16Great catch. Thx Michael.
153TYPO

Third paragraph from the bottom, beginning with “Of course, they might turn around . . ” Grammatically, the “they” refers to the last referenced person which in this case is the customer. But it doesn’t seem that the customer is the one who is replacing a team member. More likely, it is a manager on your side.

2010-05-16Thanks Michael. I tweaked this section to read a bit better.
163TYPO

First paragraph under the box, beginning with “While a really large project. .” Remove the “While.” Using “while” creates a subordinate clause rather than a complete sentence.

2010-05-16Yes I see that. This sentence was really a continuation from the previous thought. Removing the while makes it much better. Thx.
183TYPO

@nd bullet in the box. “I awesome work on the print module.” Needs a verb.

2010-05-16Removed the I. This is dialogue. Reads better without. Thx.
183TYPO

Sorry. My last entry (43252) should have said “2nd bullet” instead of “@bullet.”

2010-05-16No worries. Your feedback has been stellar!
32TYPO

Now if you are wondering where all the programmers, testers, and analysts are don’t worry—they’re still there.

Comma should go between “are” and “don’t worry.”

2010-05-25I am beginning to trust you are on things grammatical. Thanks again Michael.
35TYPO

The analysis is the relentless detective who asks . . .

“Analysis” should be “analyst.”

2010-05-25Thx Michael. Good catch.
33TYPO

5th paragraph, repeated word “they”; “But generally they they set the priorities”

2010-05-25Got it. Thx Tony.
26ERROR

2.2 First paragraph is not well formulated

2010-05-25You are right. I was missing a word in there. Thx.
22TYPO

Paragraph - A few words on language -
Last sentence “one in the same” should be “one and the same”?

2010-05-25You are correct sir. Thank you.
9TYPO

At “Inside you are going to learn”
First bullet “.” is missing at end of line. :D

2010-05-25Good eye Ryheul. Every little bit counts.
59TYPO

Repeated word ‘software’ in
“For this exercise, imagine your customer walked into your local soft-ware software store and saw your product box sitting there on the shelf.”

2010-05-25Nice. Thanks Tony.
61TYPO

‘pf’ Should be “of” if
“everyone can get a clear picture at a glance pf where the boundaries of our project lie.”

2010-05-25Thx again Tony.
63TYPO

2nd last paragraph, just above the bullets.
Repeated word ‘and’ in “started coming out of nowhere and and making ridiculous demands of me and the team.”

2010-05-25Beauty. Thx Tony.
75TYPO

2nd last paragraph, ‘with’ should be ‘when’ in “Randy and agile sing from the same song sheet with it comes to sizing up IT projects—the smaller the better”

2010-05-25Argg. How embarrassing. Thanks.
83TYPO

2nd paragraph: “Only be making them visible, and putting them up where all can see, **will confirm you truly understand that which is most important to your customer.”

‘be’ should be ‘by’

consider rewording this as “will you truly confirm and understand that which is most important to the customer”

2010-05-25Oh I love that Tony. Much better. Thx for the suggestion.
27SUGGEST

Maybe you could mention something about the time overlap when working in distributed teams. What would be the best to look for (as much time overlap, or a few hours). I think it depends on how close the team needs to work together and what there job description is. Of-course when on the job training is needed especially in the beginning it should be very useful to have as much overlap as possible.

Hire the best talent regardless of where it is.When there is less overlap the time with no overlap can be used as “alone time” as everyone needs to finish up things. “Rework - 37signals”

2010-05-29I like this train of thought Ryheul. I agree that for a team to really gel and form co-location and working closely together are really important. \n \nYet I also appreciate the need for alone time (for critical thinking) and having a few hours of that isn't necessary a bad thing. \n \nThanks for your thoughts on this.
28TYPO

Encourage unplanned collaborations
Last paragraph in the gray box - collaboration ensued - should be collaboration ensured. (‘r’ is missing there)

2010-05-29In this case I actually meant to say 'collaboration ensued' meaning when Pixar brought their people together ... collaboration ensued. They started collaborating. \n \nThx for highlighting. May change if this sounds too wordy.
30TYPO

In the second paragraph “testers are now expected handle the project management” - “testers are now expected to handle project management”

2010-05-29Good one. Thank's Ryheul.
30TYPO

In the fourth paragraph “So how to you get your team to self organize?”
- “to” should be “do”

2010-05-29Got it. Thx.
30TYPO

At the second bullet-point “You worry less about what titles and roles, and more interested” - “You worry less about titles and roles, you are more interested in..”

2010-05-29Thx Ryheul. Changed it to: \n \n You worry less about titles and roles, and become more interested in seeing the continuous production of working tested software.
72SUGGEST

The hyphenation of ‘arse-nal’ in the para beginning ‘But talking about risk…’ made me laugh, especially given the context, but I suspect you might want to fix it!

2010-05-29Haha that is funny. Fixed. Thx Stephen.
31TYPO

In the fourth paragraph “software that you and your team is building is changing their lives” - “is building should be are building”. Also I don’t know if it is a mistake but “These aren’t invisible people in some way off far place” - some way off far place? is it some kind of saying in English?

2010-05-29Thx Ryheul. \nI re-wrote this section. Was getting too wordy. I think this reads better: \n \n \nThe simple act of putting teams in front of real live customers and having them demo their software will go miles towards making your team more accountable. \n \n \n \nFor one, your team will see that real people are counting on them to deliver. Real people, with real problems, needing real software to make their lives better. \n \n \n \nSecondly, it will only take one bad demo for your team to take a sudden interest making sure the software is ready for feedback and everything works. They will insist on becoming empowered to make this happen. If they don't you've got a bigger problem. \n
31TYPO

Cross functional
In the first paragraph “and being able to delivery it fully” should be “deliver it fully”.

2010-05-29Got it. Thx.
33TYPO

The agile customer
“Make tough trades-offs around scope” should be “Make tough trade-offs around scope”?

2010-05-29
34SUGGEST

Suggestion at the fourth paragraph - When issues are estimated and the teams velocity does not allow to add the next highest priority task, an other issue can be chosen to make the sprint (release) planning. When there are issues with high estimation points it should of course be spitted up in separate tasks. For making good user stories - “User Stories Applied - Mike Cohn”

2010-06-06Thx Ryheul. I touch on this earlier in : \n \nHow to host a story gathering workshop \n \nBut you raise a good point. Team should definitely break big stories up to fit within an iteration.
34TYPO

At the 7th paragraph “In early versions of XP this this is referred to…” Twice ‘this’ on a row.

2010-05-29Got it. Thx again.
34TYPO

In the penultimate paragraph “they are empowered and willing to make the kinds of decisions that are going to have to be made for the success of the project”

first “kinds of decisions” shouldn’t it be “kind of decisions” except if you mean the different types of decisions they can make.

second “that are going to have to be made…” - “that need to be made…”

2010-05-29Good one. Fixed it. Thank you.
35SUGGEST

In the first paragraph - “the customer would like developed” - something is missing there e.g. “the customer would like to see supported by their software”.

Maybe a stupid thing but perhaps an intended use of pleonasm: “production ready working code” - working code should always be production ready - and code which is production ready should always be working :) (not that it will always be working but thats not the right place to talk about :)).

2010-05-29
35TYPO

In the second paragraph “as much I as like the spirit and intent behind the no-formal-role agile team” - “as much as I like” and “intent” should be “intention”?

2010-05-29This one I think reads OK. \nI like the word intent there over intention. \n \nThx.
39SUGGEST

First bullet point in the gray box.
“this is what am I good at” should be “this is what I’m good at”

Also in the same box first paragraph beneath the bullet points.
“And the results they could be expected to deliver on the project” sounds more like the project is already finished maybe use “and the results they could expect to deliver on the project”?

2010-06-14I like the first change Ryheul. \nThe second one I think is OK as is. \n'The results they could be expected to deliver' sounds OK to me (not necessarily past tense). \n \nCheers - Jonathan
40SUGGEST

In the 4th paragraph last sentence “In fact, the hallmark of a good agile PM is that could disappear for a week and no one would notice” does not read very well I think. “In fact, the hallmark of a good agile PM is that no one would notice the PM disappeared for a week” - Meaning that the team is completely independent of the PM input, and the team is completely self organizing.

2010-06-07
173TYPO

Just above the “9.7 Kanban” heading: “favor” should be “flavor” (or flavour if you’re British).

2010-06-07Got it. Thx Jakob.
209TYPO

All “Deck” variables starting from 2nd example should be de-capitalized -> “deck”

2010-06-14Sorry Reuven I can't find it. \n \nCan you give me the sentence of one of them?
297TYPO

First sentence of the last paragraph, the word “that’s” is repeated. “A medium-sized team that’s that’s a little more spread out…”

2010-06-07Nice catch. Thx Andrew.
30TYPO

6th paragraph (begins with “Look,”) 2nd sentence. Change “done too them” to “done to them”.

2010-06-07Got it. Thank you Mr. Meyers.
114114TYPO

Grammar issue - should say “stop” instead of “stopping”. See below:

“The simple fact is that accurate upfront estimates aren’t possible and
we need to stopping pretending that they are.”

2010-06-07Ah good one. Thx Tim.
24TYPO

“here” should be “hear” in the line “but if you here me say”

2010-06-07Got it. Thx Jamie.
34TYPO

In the “Agile customer” diagram, “Makes the tough trades-offs” should be “trade-offs”

2010-06-07I see it. Thx Zachary.

2010-06-14Good eye. Thanks C.R.

199TYPO

Very top of page:
To avoid this dysfunction, create a common, shared, language that you and the business share,
The word “share” is used twice and makes the sentence circular. Remove the first “share” so that the sentence reads:
To avoid this dysfunction, create a common language that you and the business share,

2010-06-14I like it. Thanks Michael.
201TYPO

In the second Master paragraph, the repetition of the word “root” makes the following sentence circular: “Where reason and logic fail, the root cause is usually rooted in emotion.” Perhaps remove the first “root” so that the sentence reads: “Where reason and logic fail, the cause is usually rooted in emotion.”

2010-06-14You are right. Thx Michael I will fix.
211TYPO

Second paragraph from the bottom, first sentence. It reads “Next we are going to look at how to build on our unit tests and do something so critical that were we to some how skip this practice . . .” Change “some how” to “somehow.”

2010-06-14Thx again Michael. Nothing gets by you :)
212TYPO

First sentence. “Just like a house with a mortgage, software has debt that continuously need to be paid down too.” Change “need” to needs."

2010-06-14
212TYPO

Last paragraph, first sentence. “If this all sounds really cool and powerful that’s because it is.” There should be a comma after “powerful.”

2010-06-14I actually change this a bit. This sentence no longer appears. \nThanks Michael.
222TYPO

Numbered sentence near the top of page. “1. Are we near the project?” I am assuming that it should read “1. Are we near the end of the project?”

2010-06-14You are corrent sir. Thank you.
226TYPO

Second sentence after rule #2. “The key word here is possible.” I think you might want to change “possible” to “possibly” since “possibly” is the word that is actually in rule #2.

2010-06-14Yes that reads better. Thx Michael.
230TYPO

Sentence in between the two code snippets. “Handing you the keyboard, Eric asks you if he can make the test pass.” it seems that “he” should be “you.” So that the sentence would read “Handing you the keyboard, Eric asks you if you can make the test pass.”

2010-06-14That's better. Thx Michael.
202SUGGEST

For this suggestion to make sense, you need to understand that I am a manager rather than a programmer, and I frequently function as a client surrogate. Everything up to Part V has been 100% understandable to me. In part V, however, while the key points are still very clear, the code examples are beyond my scope. I understand that I’m probably not the target audience for this book, but I think if you just added a paragraph or so before each of the code snippets that explained what this example was meant to show, it would really help readers like myself. And you might want to explain some general things that the non-programmer might not recognize - like explaining what language this is, etc. If, and I recognize that this is a big “if” in terms of your intentions, you want people like me to be able to follow this part, then you will need to hold our hands a little tighter.

2010-06-21This is a great piece of feedback Michael thank you. \nI am going to put some time in and see if I can't address this. \n \nYou are right. I can do a better job here of guiding readers along. \n \nThanks so much for sharing this. \n \nCheers - Jonathan
241TYPO

“But those who do make the investment enjoy can turn their projects on a dime, deploy with ease, regularly and confidently make changes to their systems, and respond to their customers needs was faster then their competitors.” Remove “enjoy.” Remove “was.” Replace “then” with “than.” It’s a pretty long sentence. Perhaps it could be split into two.

2010-07-20I split it you. You are right. Thx.
242TYPO

“Merging some simple edits a couple sentences isn’t too bad.” I think you are missing “to” in between “edits” and “a.”

2010-07-20Fixed.
242TYPO

“It’s when we don’t integrate our changes for extends periods of time that we run into trouble.” I think “extends’ should be ”extended."

2010-07-20Fixed.
243TYPO

“Open source repositories like git or Subversion and your friend here.” Change “and” to “are.” Change “friend” to “friends” so that it agrees in number with “repositories.”

2010-07-20Ah yes. Thx Michael.
67TYPO

Duplicate word “when when”

That way when when the time comes, you won’t

you out.

2010-07-20Thanks Richard. Got it.
35SUGGEST

In the section “Roles we typically see” I think there is a role missing: the Agile Architect (or Tech Lead). His responsibilities should be (among many): Coaching, Checking the big picture, and QA. This kind of role is helpful when the team is mostly composed of juniors or when there is some big enterprise architecture. Also, he should participate in coding and testing since he is not an Ivory Tower architect.

2010-07-20Hi Karl. Yes this can indeed be a role on any agile project (explicit or not). I choose to not make this an explicit role because I often see the architect participating as a developer (usually in a team lead role). \n \nBut you are right. The role is there and it can be most helpful. \n \nThanks for sharing your thoughts. \n \nCheers - JR
9TYPO

31TYPO

In the sixth paragraph, fourth sentence, I can’t actually figure out what it is trying to say. “Maybe you didn’t do a good job setting expectations around their involvement in the project means for success.” I think you need to remove the last three words from this sentence.

2010-07-20Good catch Kim. Thx will fix.
33TYPO

In the paragraph before the “Cross functional” heading, first sentence, I think you are missing the word “in”. It should read, “… for your team to take a sudden

2010-07-20Yes thank you.
47TYPO

In the last paragraph on the page, first sentence, there is a missing word “to”. It should read, “In this part, we are going to look …”.

2010-07-20Great catch. Thx again Kim.
69TYPO

In the second to last paragraph, only sentence, it does not read right and I see two different ways to fix it. You could change the word “what” to “how” so that it reads, “In Chapter 5, Making it real , on the next page we are going to start to visualize how the technical solution for your project is going to look …”. Or you could leave the word “what” alone and add the word “like” after the word “look” so that it reads, “In Chapter 5, Making it real , on the next page we are going to start to visualize what the technical solution for your project is going to look like …”.

2010-07-20Kim you are amazing. Great stuff. Thank you. \nI am going to go with the 'like' second option.
78TYPO

84TYPO

In the second paragraph, first sentence, I think you should use the word “also” instead of the word “too” in order to make the sentence read better. It also looks like you used the word “others” instead of the word “other”. I think it should read, “… there are other forces we must also keep at bay.”.

2010-07-20Much better. Thx Kim.
86TYPO

2010-07-20Thx Kim.

2010-07-20Thank you.
135TYPO

In the next to last paragraph, the parenthetical expression does not read well. It should probably be something like, “(this can be easy to lose sight of when you have your heads buried in your project).” I substituted the words “have your” for “are”.

In the third paragraph, first sentence, you have some confusing wording. It currently says, “… you are going to need at least two weeks of just to clean up the existing code …”. The last paragraph on the page (“And they work very closely with the customer…”) has a grammatical or structural mismatch in the three clauses at the end:
