In the last paragraph of the page, “In child-proofing Ubutu” should be “In child-proofing Ubuntu”.

In the third paragraph, second sentence, it says “It is beyond the remit of this book…” I’m not sure what word is meant to be there, but I believe “remit” means to grow less intense or to give up something such as a payment, and is probably not the word meant to be here.

The last paragraph for tip 138 refers to step 6, but the instructions seem to refer to step 7 instead.

264TYPO

The first line of tip 230 reads “Once upon a time Linux has the poor relation when it came to multimedia playback.” Should this be “was the poor relation” or is something else meant entirely?

305ERROR

Evince (my PDF reader) chokes on the Project Gutenberg link — all other links have been working fine, but this one pops the error “Unable to open external link”. Adobe Reader is able to open the link with no problem, so it’s possible that the PDF is fine and it’s just something on my end, but thought you might want to know just in case.

The first line of the second paragraph reads “…search for and instal klipper.” Should be “…and install klipper.”

point 3. - it is not necessary to reboot to activate the wicd tray, just restart the session (logout & login).

“Ubuntu software packages all have the file extension .deb.
This stands for Debian, and is a legacy of Ubuntu’s history.”

I’d suggest rephrasing - it just sounds bad for Debian. E.g. “This stands for Debian, which Ubuntu is built on.” is more correct and respectful IMO.

“This leaves the software installation system in something of a ? state, because…” - I guess there’s a missing adjective in the place I put the question mark

Second paragraph of section 2.1, sentence 1 is Gramatically incorrect:
“You first thing you might notice is that it’s virtually icon-free.”
Should probably be:
“The first thing you might notice is that it’s virtually icon-free.”

section 2.2, paragraph 1, sentence 2.
“You were allocated a tranche of space to save your personal data…”

tranche, a French word, is an ambiguous word in English having different meanings in different parts of the English speaking world. In the US it is probably most familiar in cooking as referring to a slice or portion of meat cut at an angle to show more surface. This is often referred to as ‘French cut’ in the vernacular.

It also relates to wine futures and has a financial meaning.

Many people will not get the meaning of a part or portion.

I’d suggest a less ambiguous phrase and just say:
“You were allocated space to save your personal data…”

In the second paragraph of Tip 68, replace all instances of ‘apt-get’ with ‘aptitude’.

Last paragraph of tip 90 should read “If you’d like to…”, not “If you’re like to…”.

Tip 266: Install Skype should mention that Skype is not available natively for AMD64 versions of Linux. It’s possible, but horrible, to install the 32-bit version and the last time I did it, it just didn’t work properly so I uninstalled it.

46ERROR

The discussion of Wubi on page 45/46 is slightly ambiguous when it says users won’t be able to access their Windows partition. It’s true that the partition can’t be mounted in the traditional way, as with a standard installation, but the Windows files can be accessed by browsing to the /host directory. For more information, see the Wubi FAQ at the official Wubi site.

The Contents page is blank, i.e., there is no table and no contents, only a page header. Same behavior in multiple readers and on multiple platforms. PragProg Support rolled up a new one but it has the same problem. PragProg Support suggested entering errata. Here it is. Here I am.
