Free vs. Open Source

Now that Sun has released Java under GPL this may need to be re-worked a bit.

Good read so far! Thanks!

In section:

3.2 Cartesian Planes

The line:

He is credited with codifying the practice of describing points using X, Y, and Z ordinates.

Should say:

coordinates

Thanks!

42SUGGEST

Cosmetic suggestion. In the “Datum and Projections” section the first line collides with the word datum in the margin.

Thanks!

Coordinate typo again, last sentence of the first paragraph:

(When describing
a geographic point in decimal degrees, you should use at least 6 places
to the right of the decimal point to ensure the same level of accuracy as
a full DMS ordinate.)

Coordinate again. 4 instances on this page.

Third paragraph down. The word “projections” should be singular:

So what does EPSG:4269 mean? It should come as no surprise that it

Coordinate again, 1st paragraph, 2nd and 4th sentences:

Knowing that the left border of the image is the international date line, –180 is used for the X ordinate.

Using 90 for the Y ordinate yields the same effect

In the last paragraph reads “This is the EPSG number we discussed in the last chapter”. The EPSG discussion came about in Chapter 3, not Chapter 4.

Any chance you would still add a section or two on Google Earth?

“We needed GDAL to build PostGIS” is not true.
PostGIS is not needed GDAL/OGR, and OGR’s PostGIS supports only needs libpq and does not need PostGIS installetion.

What I want to say in #6111 is … “PostGIS does not need GDAL to build it, and GDAL also does not PostGIS to build with PostGIS support” .

FYI: you mention fink as a source for GEOS/proj/GDAL, I was able to sucessfully obtain these versions 2.2.1/4.4.9 & 1.4.1 respectively from MacPorts (V1.44) On page 139 you mention LibGeoTIFF, version 1.2.1 was installed as a prereq for GDAL.

You may want to mention Macports as an alternative source for these utilities.

Second paragraph under “Scale and ….”
By my reckoning a 30cm:30km scale is 30:3,000,000 (30 x 1000m x 100cm) book has 30:3,000,0000

i.e. extraneous 0 on end

The QGIS link may be out of date - not sure. I downloaded QGIS-0.8.0-dmg.gz following the download link from book, this disk image contained an application called “openmap” which has a different UI to the books expectations. Downoaded previous release 0.7.4-dmg.gz and it looked as shown in the book but while the layer loaded and meta data was accessible (including the thumbnail) the image was not rendered.

It would be nice if the EPSG code showed up
somewhere in the WTK,

BTW, it was nice meeting you at FRUGOS all that time ago. Too bad we don’t have events more often.

UTM 13 N based on NAD83 is EPSG:26915.

It’s 26913, actually. I lived in zone 13 (Northern CA) for some years, 26713 and 26913 are indeed “second nature”. :)

129TYPO

We can reproject the points from
degrees into meters using our trusty UTM 13 N projection. Recall that
the SRID for UTM 13 N is 26915:

Actually, it’s 26913. 26915 would be zone 15N.

7260ERROR

The following text (starts the last paragraph of this page) appears twice in this paragraph:

“This perfectly illustrates the ideas I first put forth in Chapter 2, Vectors,
on page 19. Vector data is an abstract representation of reality. In
the case of Google Maps, by showing less detail in the vector layer, you
actually get more information. The map designer has effectively eliminated
much of the “noise” and boiled the vector layer down to its bare
essentials. The primary purpose of Google Maps is to give driving directions,
so the elements that don’t aid in that endeavor (sidewalks, trees,
and so on) are removed. Although this version of the software doesn’t
do it, it could quite easily remove roads from the map that are closed
for construction or even remove all roads that aren’t on your route from
point A to point B."

in pdf version: this copy is (First printing, October 2007)

First paragraph under Globes, last sentence:
“… an typical city” should be “… a typical city”.

Caption for Figure 2.7:

…displaying the both the states…

The first “the” should be deleted.

The zip file in footnote 10 is downloadable, but when unzipped it doesn’t seem to be a directory. It shows up as a document named “co08_d00.e00”.

Also, in step 2 of section 2.11, the name of the zip file (co08_d00.zip) is different than the name of the zip file in the link (co08_d00_e00.zip).

4028TYPO

Step 1 in section 2.13: there’s no link called Administrative Boundaries under the Data drop-down menu. Looks like it’s called “Geopolitical Boundaries” (at least that’s where you can download shape files for Canada).

4129ERROR

The highways that I downloaded (following the link in footnote 14 and instructions on this page) seemed to fit in fine. They were immediately visible, and at first glance look very much like a highway system.

7462SUGGEST

Section 4.2, second paragraph, and link under footnote 2: Don’t be modest, go ahead and give us the title of your book. ;-) It’s nice for when we’re not in front of a computer and can’t go click the link to find out what it is (quicker too).

22SUGGEST

Specify that you’re using ArcExplorer Java Edition for Education (latest rev is 3.2.3) — the non-Education version (latest is 9.2) doesn’t match up to the book. Also the Education version isn’t available on Linux, and the non-Education version doesn’t seem to install on Linux (but that’s not your problem).

28ERROR

Seems like edcftp.cr.usgs.gov is no longer a free source of data? I get 403 Forbidden trying to access the links, e.g. footnote 12.

68SUGGEST

Put “(Area of Interest)” in parentheses after “AOI”. You defined it in a prior chapter and this is the only other time it’s used in the book, so don’t assume we remember it.

viSUGGEST

I’ve submitted 3 errata now but I listed the book version as P1.0. However the actual version in my book is “2007-7-13” (First printing Oct 2007), which is not listed as a choice in your Version pull-down menu. So I just had to guess.

19TYPO

“ogr2org” should be “ogr2ogr”.

123123ERROR

pgsql2shp fails
fe_sendauth: no password supplied

116TYPO

In the paragraph starting “The fifth and last parameter…”, a sentence reads “If we needed to store points that also had elevation data (X Y X)…”. This should be “(X Y Z)”.

242TYPO

The first paragraph, second sentence refers to the website “Vactionworld”. This should be “Vacationworld”.
